Bodywork for the Childbearing Cycle

This hands-on course emphasizes anatomy and the physiology of pregnancy, the use of bodywork as an appropriate adjunct to prenatal care, and using massage as a means of developing deeper kinesthetic awareness in preparation for labor and birth and postpartum recovery. Films are shown each day and numerous handouts are provided.
The first day begins with a review of systems through the lens of pregnancy physiology and structural change. Contraindications, benefits and goals of bodywork during pregnancy are discussed in detail. Participants will learn and practice setting up the massage table and draping the client appropriately with optimal bolstering for each trimester of pregnancy.
An overview of emotional milestones during the three trimesters of pregnancy and corresponding obstetrical care will be discussed in depth so participants will have a deeper understanding of the contemporary experience of pregnancy. Ethics and the role of the massage therapist will be discussed in this context.
The second day begins with distinguishing between common discomforts and concerns which require consultation with a midwife or physician. The focus of the morning is on structural assessment of the client, history taking and a detailed demonstration. Emphasis is given to working with areas of tension and myofascial restriction commonly associated with pregnancy. Each student will have the opportunity to practice with another student and will have two full hours of practice time with a pregnant volunteer.
The third day is essential to therapists working with pregnant clients: It emphasizes the legacy of changes inherent in pregnancy, birth, cesarean surgery, and providing newborn care. Participants will learn about the physiological and psychological changes following both natural and surgical birth. Addressing these changes with active listening skills and bodywork are our focus. Swedish, deep tissue and Kinetic Myofascial Mobilization techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. In addition, postural assessment and teaching sound postpartum body mechanics are covered. Cesarean scar care and adhesion reduction is shown and practiced. Emotional and social adjustment issues are addressed, as participants may be in contact with the mother soon after birth. Giving a massage with a baby at the breast and/or on the table is demonstrated.
At the close of the day, marketing and networking in this specialty will be discussed in depth. Participants who complete the program will receive certification.

Prenatal Massage Lab
This course is open only to those who have graduated from Susanrachel's Bodywork for the Childbearing Cycle course.
Whether you attended Bodywork for the Childbearing Cycle ten years ago or last month, have you ever wanted to attend another focused practice session?
If you've already incorporated some of what you learned into your practice but would like to revisit and hone the techniques from class, this lab is for you. There will be no demonstration, so attendees will have the entire time to experiment and expand on their skills.
Participants will practice with pregnant volunteers for 90 minute sessions. Susanrachel will assist with draping, positioning, body mechanics and techniques - providing personalized 1:1 attention. Bring your questions, frustrations and goals to achieve mastery in this essential modality.
