Professional labor Companion Certification

SWEDISH INSTITUTE CERTIFICATION

FOR PROFESSIONAL LABOR ASSISTANTS

Niara Healing Arts Professional Labor Assistants Certification Program

Our mission is to offer a solid foundation on which trainees may build their own experiential education. As every labor and birth is unique, we aspire to engender flexibility, compassion and wonder in our trainees. The introductory workshop includes an in-depth exploration of the current maternity care crisis, the anatomy and physiology of labor/birth/postpartum, complications of labor/birth and appropriate clinical care, medical interventions and their impact on the experience of the family, hands-on techniques and other comfort measures, challenging births, self-care and business development. Participants may embark upon this adventure whether or not they are planning to pursue certification and/or further training.

In order to complete the credentialing process following completion of the introductory class, you will need to accomplish the following:

For Entry Level CPLC

These requirements apply to those who have no prior birth attendance or childbirth education experience. (Your own births, while miraculous, cannot be applied for credit, as you were certainly not observing them!) You will have two years from the workshop date to complete these requirements. There is a $100 review fee, which should be submitted with your written materials upon completion (checks to Niara Healing Arts).

Completion of the Basic PLC Workshop and post-test

Documentation of attendance at a breastfeeding class (We will offer a class once annually and can refer you to others.)

Four book reports from the required reading list and two from the recommended reading list

Attendance and reports for five labors/births (To meet this requirement, you must attend continuously from the onset of active labor and through at least the first postpartum hour.)

Reports on prenatal and postpartum contact with those whose births are attended

Three letters of recommendation or evaluation forms from people who were present at the same births you attended (parents or clinicians)

For Advanced Level CPLC

These requirements apply to those who have at least one year of prior experience in attendance at births and/or childbirth education. (Your own births, while miraculous, cannot be applied for credit, as you were certainly not observing them!) You will have two years from the workshop date to complete these requirements. There is a $100 review fee, which should be submitted with your written materials (checks to Niara Healing Arts).

Completion of the Basic PLC Workshop and post-test
